American Brandstand

I was listening to the radio while getting ready for work this morning and they were talking about brand name references in rap songs. They were talking about how Burberry Clothing does not want to be affiliated with rap music but its traditional conservative roots. This led me to search the internet and I came across American Brandstand.

This site charts commercial references of the Billboard Top 20 and lists which name brands are mentioned most often (check out the weekly charts).

The top references of 2003 were:
Mercedes
Lexus
Gucci
Cadillac
Burberry
Prada
Cristal

With 50 Cent dropping 55 different brand names in his songs to lead all singers.

For discussion: What are the positive and negative aspects of having your product mentioned in different performers songs?

i think that for people that like rap music and are into materialism like to hear the brands and want to be like the star...that is the positive...and the neg. is opposite.....people may start to view the brand as for gangsters and people of that sort...sorry about the grammar

I think that having your brand or product on a song couold be good, but also might have a negitive effect. People might not like to hear their product associated with a rap song, but then it might make the young people of today more willing to use that product, which might help that company. Also it might be a way to get people to hear of a product or company if its not very well known.

In all seriousness... I would rather prefer to hear Metallica sing about the bad parts of drug addiction in Master of the Puppets then hear Ludicris (TALKING) about shooting everyone he knows 'cept for his home dogs but thats just me. I can see why brand names would want to both have their products in songs but at the same time it could be a bad idea for they would have lost a coustomer to that store for even liking Rap...

~ Currently Waiting for the rise of Heavy Metal rock music amongst kids of today~

This is funny. I have never noticed all the brand names in rap because i dont listen to it plain and simple. I would rather hear people play instruments than have someone recite poetry over other people's music.

But that might just be me

the pro of this is that it could increase sales of those products, but the con is that it could give people the wrong image for those products.
