This One Amazed Me . . .

We all have heard about the recent problems with America getting fatter and fatter. Obesity has gotten worse in the last 20 years and childhood obesity is a sign that things will probably get worse before it gets better.

The question is what has caused this potential health disaster. There are many reasons but one novel reason comes from the journal: The Public Interest. It states:

After analyzing the strengths of the various factors that could explain the current obesity 'epidemic,' is roted in two causes: First, and most importantly, the growth in the number of fast food and full service restaurants since 1980. Second, they found that the decrease in the number of people smoking also had a significant effect

I disagree with their statement. I believe people make their own decisions about what they eat and that is the root. I disagree with them blaming it on an outside factor.

For Discussion: What do you believe is the cause for obesity.

I think that the reason for obestiy is that people just dont care what they eat. I mean, if your on your way to work and you're hungry you arent going to go buy a nice healthy expnsive salad.. you're most likely got to hit the drive through at Micky D's ...plus in america we have the money to get good expensive meals at a large quantity and most people do...~TARA

It's funny you mention that last part Tara, because some economists point out that obesity shows the economic health of America. They blame obesity on the fact that people do not exercise. Very impressive comment.

Some of it could be genetic factors, but probably most of it is that people don't want to excersise or are to addictied to video games..... like me but i dont let it get me down im a happy child!

Obesity is a big problem, but the blame shouldnt be put on fast food resturaunts. the blame should be put on the people themselves. Childhood obesity is not helping anything. Kids just arent as active like pat said they get addicted to video games also some can be genetics but if people will simply excersize and eat better this whole problem can be solved but we are too busy looking for the easy way out with gimmick diets. weight loss is something you have to do the hard way.

Americans are too lazy to worry about loosing weight, and even more lazy to not find an excuse that acually makes sense, such as blaming it on fast food and fewer smokers. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. If we wouldn't buy things such as TV's, video games, and fast food, they wouldn't sell them. Dale

That is completely true, but we do buy them. The fact is we are just lazy as a nation.

Dale and Taylor bring up an interesting point about being lazy. At first I agree, but then I think of this nation. Our innovation, inventions and work ethic is impressive. We work longer work weeks than almost all the European nations. Our intellectual output is second to none. It makes me wonder:

Do we so favor mental, intellectual and business work that we ignore physical exercise? Is it laziness, when you do not excersize because you are focusing on intellectual pursuits?

I am talking about physically being lazy and not wanting to excersize. Intellectual pursuit isnt really being lazy. As a nation we are physically lazy.
