In 1812 Napoleon invaded Russia. This showed the rest of Europe that Russia would not be taken by an outside invader.
In America from 1861 to 1865 the American Civil War occurred. This fight between the north and south regions of the nation over slavery was finally ended when the south surrendered. This ended slavery in the United States.
South America was engulfed in wars for independence in the first half of the century. This series of uprisings almost ended European oppression of Latin America.
In 1899 China was in the middle of a cultural crisis. There were Europeans trying to modernize and change the 2000 year old monarchy. Those who wished to leave things as they were and drive the Europeans out forced them out with fists in the Boxer Rebellion.
After the Emancipation Proclamation all slave trade to outside of Africa was stopped. This allowed Africa to regain its lost population and try to modernize.
Other places in Europe also had important things happen. In 1856 the Bessemer process allowed steel as we know it today to be produced. This was a major breakthrough for the railroad industry.

15. 1839 – Opium War in China
